How Do I Protect myself from unethical service provider’s?

Follow these guidelines… a motor vehicle is considered abandoned if:

• 2. It has remained illegally on public property for more than 48 hours
• 3. It has remained on private property without the consent of the owner or person in charge of the property for more than 48 hours;
• 4. It has been left unattended on the right-of-way of a designated county, state, or federal highway for more than 48 hours;
• 5. It has been left unattended for more than 24 hours on the right-of-way of a turnpike project constructed and maintained by the Texas Turnpike Authority division of the Texas Department of Transportation or a controlled access highway.

What about Parking zones?

• Check to see if you’re in a tow-away zone.
• Check for signs stating that parking is reserved for customers – if you’re not a customer.
• Any signage warning you you’ll get towed must have the name of the tow company prominently displayed. Also, you must be able to find out to which storage facility/impound the car has been taken. Their ph. number should be legible and the company must be available if it’s still within their hours of operation. Therefore, hours of operation must also be posted on the signage.

What you can do if you need emergency roadside service in the Dallas area…

Have you ever found your self stranded because you have a flat tire & your spare is not inflated? Have you tried to start your car and nothing happens? Have you lost or misplaced your keys?

Things like these happen to people all the time and… at the worst time. Here are a few safety suggestions that might keep the situation from turning from just an inconvenience to a much more stressful situation.

Should a blown tire, mechanical problems, or if you accidentally run out of fuel  and are stranded, the most important thing is to consider actions that ensure your safety. Here are some tips that will help…

Get off the road- Pull your vehicle as far off of the road as safely possible. If your vehicle is in or near traffic and you can safely walk to another location, do it. If the vehicle is parked on the shoulder of a busy highway, exit on the passenger side. Lock the door and leave a note on the windshield in case roadside assistance or the police stop by the vehicle.

Display a distress signal- Do what you can to alert police and other drivers. Raise your hood, tie a white cloth or yellow safety alert strip to the radio antenna. If you feel traffic is unsafe, roll down your window and a tie or hang a strip of cloth on your door handle.  If your car has a sunroof, hang the cloth out of the top & close it on the cloth.

Keep the doors locked- If the vehicle is in a safe location, you should wait inside and keep the doors locked and the safety belt fastened.

Make your vehicle as visible as possible- Turn on the hazard lights as soon as you feel that your vehicle is slowing down. Try your best to get to the right shoulder and when you stop, find any warning signals that you have—flares, hazard triangle, yellow tape or warning light—and use them to alert other motorists of your vehicle’s emergency. If you vehicle has flares or any other warning tools, safely put them as far behind your car to give other motorists notice of your emergency status.

Exercise caution– Above all, use good judgment in accepting help from strangers. Should someone stop, you’re suspicious of,  just lower the window only enough to talk. If you’re waiting for help, thank them for stopping but tell them you’re OK. If you need help, ask them to make a call for you.
